Video Network Monitoring

Video Network Monitoring

Your gateway says everything is fine. Your customers say it isn’t.

Video monitoring closes that gap. Instead of trusting what your equipment reports, Visium Set-Back Boxes deployed in probe mode independently validate what your customers are actually receiving. They cycle through your service and carrier lists, reporting live to Visium Manager, continuously and autonomously, before anyone picks up the phone.

Independent validation

Probe devices verify actual signal health and content availability at the edge, not inferred status from upstream equipment. If content isn’t arriving correctly, you see it in Visium Manager.

Before the phone rings

Probes cycle continuously through every channel and carrier, reporting live metrics to Visium Manager. Issues surface in your NOC before customers notice, or at worst, at the same time.

Pinpoint the fault

Probes at the headend output, distribution nodes and property edge tell you exactly which segment has failed — headend, network, or last mile — so you send the right person to the right place.

QAM and IP, clear and encrypted

Covers QAM and IP multicast delivery in a single solution, including Pro:Idiom encrypted services. No separate monitoring infrastructure for different delivery types.

The problem with trusting your own equipment

A gateway that is processing and outputting content will report that it is working correctly. That is what it is designed to do. What it can’t tell you is whether what it’s putting on the network is actually reaching your customers intact or whether what it received in the first place was correct to begin with.

Incoming content can have errors that never trigger a gateway alarm. Distribution infrastructure can degrade a signal without anything in your headend knowing. A customer’s screen can be showing corrupted video while every system upstream reports green. The only way to know what your customers are receiving is to look at what they are receiving, independently, at the edge and continuously.

How it works

Visium Set-Back Boxes deployed in probe mode act as autonomous monitoring instruments on your network. Unlike room-serving SBBs, which display content to guests or residents, probe-mode devices do one job: cycle through a configured list of services and carriers, collect signal and service health metrics and report everything back to Visium Manager in real time, with no operator intervention required.

You place probes at key points in your distribution chain and each one validates what’s actually present at that location, so when something goes wrong, you know immediately which segment has failed.

Probe placement across the distribution chain

Probe-mode Visium SBBs are deployed separately in infrastructure locations. They do not replace or interfere with room-serving devices. Each probe cycles autonomously through its configured service and carrier list, with all findings timestamped and reported live to Visium Manager.

What it monitors

Probes cover the three content delivery formats common in commercial bulk video deployments — QAM, IP and ABR streaming. Each delivery type reports its own set of metrics, collected per service or carrier and reported live, so you always know exactly what’s happening at the format level as well as the property level.

IP multicast

Probes tune sequentially through a provisioned list of IP multicast services. For each stream you get video and audio presence across all audio tracks, available PIDs, encryption type (clear or Pro:Idiom), bitrate, service tuning time and packet and stream errors, including dropped, errored and decoded frames. Service ID and name reported per result.

QAM

Probes scan through a defined QAM carrier list. For each carrier, you get BER, SNR, signal strength in dBmV, MER and bitrate. Service-level data per carrier includes available PIDs, video and audio presence, encryption type (clear or Pro:Idiom), carrier tuning time and full fault details and error messages.

ABR / local streaming

Monitors locally originated ABR streams on your property network, HLS or DASH generated on-premises. Validates that locally sourced content is being served and decoded correctly alongside the main channel lineup.

  6. Autonomous cycling — no manual intervention

Autonomous operation

Once provisioned through Visium Manager, probe devices operate without manual intervention. Each probe cycles sequentially through its configured service or carrier list, collecting and reporting metrics continuously. If connectivity to Visium Manager is temporarily interrupted, monitoring continues — the probe keeps cycling and resumes reporting when the connection is restored.

You set and update the active monitoring mode, whether it’s IP multicast, QAM or streaming, centrally through Visium Manager, along with the service and carrier lists each probe monitors. Firmware updates are deployed across your entire probe fleet remotely through the same platform, with no site visits required.

Built on the Visium platform

The solution uses existing Visium Platform hardware and management infrastructure so there’s no separate monitoring platform to buy, deploy or maintain.
