Areca Remote Monitoring Unit

The Areca™ Remote Monitoring Unit (RMU) is a standalone device that enables MSOs and other service providers to monitor a single or multiple daisy-chained Areca Hybrid Supercapacitor energy modules from a headend or network operations center (NOC) or other remote facility. The standalone device, which takes up 1 rack unit and can be mounted in either a 19- or 23-inch telecommunications rack or installed onto a standard DIN rail, transmits the status of ATX energy storage systems and provides technicians with alarms or notifications if standby power operations need attention or are unavailable.

A single Areca RMU can monitor up to 15 Areca energy storage hybrid supercapacitor modules and is equipped with a dashboard providing a summary of all monitored units, with the ability to monitor each module individually. The RMU device supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and other network management and monitoring standards and communications over an IP network. The information available through the Areca RMU includes the energy medium’s voltage, available current, charging status and other performance data, which can be accessed through an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) that interfaces with the RMU.

The inability to monitor the health and status of Value Regulated Lead Acid (VLRA) batteries from headends, NOCs or other remote locations is a major shortcoming of lead-acid batteries. The Areca RMU addresses this deficiency by enabling technicians to tap into the status of ATX energy storage systems located across service provider networks, including headends, central offices and portions of wireline and wireless access networks.

  • Receive Advanced Notification of Energy Storage Issues or Vulnerabilities: The Areca RMU provides technicians with up-to-the-second information about the operational status of energy storage systems located across the network, including difficult-to-reach sites. This capability enables MSOs and other service providers, which are often unaware of inoperative or under-charged lead-acid batteries in their backup power operations until a network failure, to protect against service disruptions due to power interruptions.
  • Reduce Operational Costs and Truck Rolls: The ability to monitor the status of backup energy storage modules reduces the need for MSOs and other service providers to dispatch technicians to remote locations to check the health of backup power sources. Remote monitoring of Areca energy storage equipment also provides service providers with the peace of mind that their subscribers will not lose service in the event of a power failure.
  • Quick Integration into Existing Monitoring Operations: The Areca RMU’s easy installation enables MSOs and other service providers to gain access to critical energy storage monitoring information within seconds of installing the RMU, which supports SNMP and other standards. An intuitive GUI provides NOC technicians with an easy-to-understand dashboard that can be customized to conform to end-user requirements.
