ATX Unveils Portfolio of Supercapacitor Energy Storage Solutions

Next-gen technology enables operators to reduce costs, increase reliability with longer backup power and cleaner energy storage

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 20, 2022 – ATX Networks, a global leader in broadband access and media distribution solutions, today debuted the ATX SCE Series of Supercapacitor Energy Storage Solutions, next-generation energy storage modules based on state-of-the-art supercapacitor technology and supported by ATX’s newly expanded professional services organization.

The new technology offers significant improvements over alternative standby power sources, such as valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) and Lithium-Ion batteries. The solution equips service providers with an environmentally clean, safe, space-efficient and long-lasting energy storage solution designed to accommodate future infrastructure expansion while increasing reliability and reducing the overall cost of ensuring continuous operations.

“ATX is excited to empower service providers around the world with energy storage technology that will contribute significantly to their carbon footprint reduction goals through safe and sustainable solutions that can be dramatically more effective and cost-efficient than existing battery-based systems,” said Bob Murphy, Sr. Vice President of Business Services at ATX. “Going green is just one of the many benefits of our new supercapacitor-based solutions, a generational leap in energy storage that will put operators on a fast path to revolutionizing their backup powering operations and transitioning to cleaner and safer energy mediums.”

The ATX backup power modules leverage supercapacitor technology to provide operators with the ability to significantly improve their existing energy storage systems. ATX’s SCE Supercapacitor Energy Storage solutions can operate in temperatures between -40 and +60 degrees Celsius, expanding deployment options and increasing reliability. The solution’s ability to concentrate energy into a smaller footprint than existing storage options enables operators to reclaim valuable real estate in both large facilities and in outside plant locations. The technology also enables a 100% Depth of Discharge (DoD), which means that ATX’s energy storage solutions offer maximum performance efficiency.

The ATX energy storage portfolio is built on technology supplied by Supercapacitor Energy, LLC, a market leader in energy storage.

The supercapacitor-based energy storage technology, which stores energy electrostatically rather than electrochemically, is environmentally friendly. It poses no risks of leaks of corrosive liquids or thermal runaway, a chemical event that could cause alternative solutions to ignite or be shut down. Built to meet the most stringent regulatory restrictions, the ATX SCE Supercapacitor Energy Storage solutions include configurations that comply with California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) requirements for backup battery duration of 72 hours.

The energy storage chemistry and performance advantages of supercapacitor technology adds up to significant operational savings. ATX energy storage modules charge faster, run longer and have a significantly longer lifespan — more than 20 years — than alternative options, minimizing maintenance requirements and delivering total cost of ownership advantages over the life of the solution.

ATX will initially focus on supercapacitor products that function as uninterruptible power sources (UPS) or standby power for cable operators, telecom and satellite service providers, both fixed and wireless, as well as select datacenter applications. Initial systems include 36V and 48V modules that support a variety of kilowatthour (KWh) configurations and fit into standard enclosures or 19-, 23- or 29-inch racks, with some solutions delivering 72 hours of continuous operation.

In most environments, the ATX energy storage modules will fit into existing enclosures, allowing operators to seamlessly replace old or expiring energy sources without the need to disrupt existing powering systems or replace enclosures or other infrastructure. ATX’s SCE Supercapacitor Energy Storage solutions’ seamless replacement properties enable operators to update and revitalize their energy storage operations gradually and without interrupting subscriber services.

In addition, the breakthrough backup power technology is backed by ATX’s professional services organization, which offers an end-to-end certified battery replacement service that includes site review, uninstalling existing systems, installation of supercapacitors and a complete battery recycling program.

Select ATX SCE Supercapacitor Energy Storage solutions are now generally available and commercial shipments are scheduled for later this year.

ATX will be showcasing its supercapacitor energy storage technology at this week’s SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Philadelphia, PA.
